Overall, though, this is sadly a lackluster follow-up to Modern Warfare 2019’s refined take on a Call of Duty campaign, and an experience that’s already fading in my memory. In the areas it does innovate it almost always stumbles, although there does remain some enjoyment to be taken in its momentary flashes of inspiration. But beyond each thunderous pull of the trigger is an underwhelming story and level designs that are too concerned with replicating the successes of previous campaigns rather than embracing its own good ideas for more than a single mission apiece. It’s still exactly the kind of Call of Duty experience you expect, but it shifts its focus enough to where it feels distinct and different, and it's easily my favorite Call of Duty multiplayer game of the last few years.įirst off, the gunplay in Modern Warfare 2's multiplayer is rock solid. The amazingly flexible weapon progression and tuning system, rock-solid gunplay, and some really awesome and inventive new modes on huge maps have me enjoying this iteration of the CoD formula more than I can remember in a long time. With Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Infinity Ward has brought back a familiar and cozy style of combat with more than enough variety to make it feel like more than a simple reskin of last year’s Vanguard. It's likely we'll see more people point out other references in the coming days and weeks to follow.Each autumn I look forward to crisp cool mornings, vibrant foliage, the return of pumpkin spice, and the chance to experience a new year of Call of Duty multiplayer. Some are a bit more obvious than others, such as references to iconic lines or moments from the original trilogy.
There are almost certainly other Easter eggs in the game that are flying under people's radars. It's a subtle, simple, but distinct image and detail that indicates it's a clear reference to Breaking Bad. They then cover the bullet holes with tape later on. For those who have never seen the series, the side door to Walter White and Jesse Pinkman's mobile meth lab and RV is shot a few times after Walter traps some rival drug dealers inside of it. There are multiple RVs on the map, particularly on the south side, and they all have tape on the side door. On the Santa Sena Border Crossing multiplayer map, which is a car-filled bridge between America and Mexico, there's a reference to Breaking Bad.
